A Modern & Colourful Home, Muswell Hill

Having worked on a previous project with these clients it’s always nice when a client comes back and wants your design input on another project.

The brief was to open up the space and create a large open plan living, dining, and lounge area.

The front of the house is North facing and therefore rather dark. Apart from taking down two walls, a large opening was also made between the front living area and the rear. As the client had two children who would do homework and watch TV in the front living space, they still wanted to create some division but without compromising on light. I persuaded them to have Bespoke Crittall Doors made, which not only look great but stopped noise emanating from one area to another.

Having removed walls it was difficult to place radiators in all areas, I therefore decided to put in under floor heating. Also the client had several art pieces which were essential to be hung, which would have been impossible if radiators were used.

The client wanted hard wood flooring throughout the ground floor so a wide oak board was laid.

In the large open space that was created to the rear a rather tired kitchen was replaced with a bespoke handless one. The clients are both keen cooks so it was essential that lots of storage be supplied to house all their kitchen equipment. They also wanted an island unit. I designed an oversize island that could house the dishwasher and other equipment on one side but also have further storage draws on the other.

An existing doorway from the kitchen to the hallway was removed and made bigger and a large glass panel put in to allow light to flood into the hall area.

The client had a large collection of computer games and books that they wanted shelving designed in order that they could be displayed. I designed bespoke shelving and storage either side of the fireplace that also tied in with the oak floor.

LED down lights were used in the open plan area with lutron controls so that different moods could be set. More subtle Lighting was used elsewhere with wall lights and side lights with a copper theme that was carried through to the kitchen splash back and the column.

Existing furniture was upholstered in bright colours that popped.
